Can you play GTA 6 on a Mac?

By Vladislav Gerasimchuk · · 11 min read

The Pillar's tower and 3D city at night, under the headline Can you play GTA 6 on a Mac?

Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no Mac version, no Windows version and no date for either. So a MacBook can't install it and run it, however new the chip. A Mac can still get you into GTA 6 in two ways, if you also own a console: Sony's Remote Play app and Microsoft's Xbox streaming site both send the picture from your console to the Mac. Below is every route we could check, what each one needs, why the Windows tools Mac gamers use won't help yet, and what you can play on a Mac tonight while you wait, including browser games that need no download at all.

In one line

No, not natively. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no Mac or PC version announced. A Mac can still show it if you own a console: Sony's PS Remote Play app and Xbox's browser streaming both play it from your console on the Mac's screen.

At a glance
  • GTA 6 is out November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two's own August 2026 earnings release lists no other platform.
  • No Mac or Windows version exists, so no Mac can run it, not even an M4 or M5 MacBook: there's nothing to install.
  • If you own a PS5, Sony's free PS Remote Play app for macOS streams your console to the Mac. Xbox owners can do the same from xbox.com/play in Safari or Chrome.
  • Rockstar did put GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas on the Mac in 2010 and 2011, but GTA IV and GTA V never came to Mac, and the old Mac versions stopped opening with macOS Catalina in 2019.
  • For a GTA-style city on a Mac tonight with no console, there are free browser games. The Pillar, our own, was ready to play on a 2018 MacBook Pro within 10 seconds.

Is GTA 6 coming to Mac?

Not that anyone has announced. Rockstar moved the launch to November 19, 2026, and the platforms named with that date are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as Game Informer reported on November 6, 2025. "Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026," Rockstar said, adding that the extra months would let it "finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve."

The most recent official list is Take-Two's earnings release from August 7, 2026. Its table of coming games has one line for Grand Theft Auto VI, with the platforms "PS5, Xbox Series X|S" and the date "November 19, 2026." There is no PC line and no Mac line. Take-Two owns Rockstar, so that table is as close to an official platform list as you can get before launch.

Rockstar hasn't said anything about a Mac version, and its recent history points away from one. Its last two big games, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, both reached Windows a year or more after the consoles and never reached the Mac.

Did Rockstar ever make GTA for Mac?

Yes, once, for the older games. In November 2010 Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas came to Mac OS X, converted by TransGaming with its Cider engine and sold for $15 each, Macworld reported. In August 2011 Rockstar put the same three games on the Mac App Store: GTA III on August 18, then Vice City and San Andreas the following two Thursdays, with GTA III needing Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later, per Macworld.

Those Mac versions were 32-bit apps. Apple's macOS Catalina, released in October 2019, removed support for 32-bit apps completely, and MacGamerHQ's list of affected games still marked San Andreas as "Not Yet Updated" in January 2021. On a current Mac, those old copies don't open.

Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V skipped the Mac. GTA IV came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in April 2008 and on Windows that December. GTA V came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2014, on Windows in April 2015 and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022. Neither game has ever had a Mac version.

Is there a PC version a Mac could run?

No. GTA 6 has no Windows version and no Windows date. Some Mac owners play Windows games with tools such as CrossOver or Parallels, but those tools need a Windows game to run, and GTA 6 doesn't have one yet.

Rockstar's past games show how long a Windows version can take. GTA V reached Windows on April 14, 2015, 19 months after its September 17, 2013 console launch. Red Dead Redemption 2 came out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018 and on Windows on November 5, 2019, just over a year later.

Red Dead Redemption 2October 26, 2018November 5, 2019Never

If GTA 6 follows the same pattern, a Windows version would land some time after late 2027. That is a guess from two past games. Rockstar and Take-Two haven't given a date, and the August 2026 earnings release lists consoles only.

Can a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or Mac mini run GTA 6?

No Mac can, because there is no Mac build of the game to run. A MacBook Air with an M4, a Mac mini, an iMac and a MacBook Pro with the fastest M-series chip all get the same answer: the chip, the memory and the screen don't matter when the game isn't made for the system.

Where a Mac's hardware does matter is streaming. Remote Play and cloud services decode a video stream, which any recent Mac handles easily. What they need from you is a good home network and a controller, covered in the next two sections.

An older Intel Mac, like the 2018 MacBook Pro we used for our browser tests, is in the same position as a new one for GTA 6: it can't run the game and it can stream it. The one Intel-only option, Boot Camp, is covered further down.

Can you stream GTA 6 from a PS5 to a Mac?

Yes, if you own a PS5 and the game. Sony's free PS Remote Play app runs on macOS and shows your console's screen on the Mac while you play with a PlayStation controller. The game still runs on the PS5. The Mac only shows the picture and sends your button presses back.

Sony's support page lists what the Mac needs:

  • macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia or Tahoe.
  • 40 MB of storage and 2 GB of RAM or more.
  • A DualSense, DualSense Edge or DualShock 4 controller, with a USB cable to connect it to the Mac.
  • A connection of at least 5 Mbps up and down, and at least 15 Mbps for the best results, in Sony's words.
  • A PS5 or PS4 on its latest system software, with Remote Play turned on in its settings.

Remote Play works best on the same home network as the console. It also works away from home over the internet, but the picture is only as steady as the slowest connection between the console and the Mac. Expect a softer picture than on a TV and a little delay when you steer.

Setting up PS Remote Play on a Mac

Sony's support page lists five steps, and it's worth doing them before launch day so the first evening of GTA 6 isn't spent in settings menus:

  1. On the PS5, go to Settings, then System, then Remote Play, and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  2. Still on the PS5, go to Settings, then System, then Power Saving, then Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network, so the Mac can wake the console.
  3. On the Mac, download PS Remote Play from Sony and run the installer.
  4. Open the app and sign in with the same PlayStation account you use on the console.
  5. Connect your controller to the Mac with a USB cable, and pick your PS5 in the app.

After that, the app finds the PS5 each time you open it, even while the console sleeps in rest mode. If the picture stutters, Sony's own advice is a faster connection: at least 15 Mbps up and down for the best results. You can test the whole thing today with any PS5 game you already own.

Can you stream GTA 6 from an Xbox to a Mac?

Yes, through a browser. Microsoft moved Xbox Remote Play into a web app at xbox.com/play, so Mac owners can stream their own console in Safari or Chrome with no download, Thumbsticks reported in June 2025: "Just visit www.xbox.com/play, log in, connect a controller, and start streaming."

As with Sony's app, the game runs on your Xbox at home and the Mac shows the stream. You sign in with the same Microsoft account as the console, leave the console on or in its standby mode, and connect an Xbox controller to the Mac.

Remote Play is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft's servers and needs the game to be in its cloud library. Remote Play only needs your own console and your own copy of GTA 6.

Will GTA 6 be on Game Pass or GeForce NOW?

Not at launch, as far as anything announced shows. GTA 6 is sold at full price, and Take-Two hasn't put it in any subscription. Asked in 2024 about a big Call of Duty game going straight into Game Pass, Take-Two's chief executive Strauss Zelnick said "it won't affect our decisions because our decisions are rational," in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz reported by Push Square.

NVIDIA's GeForce NOW streams PC games to a Mac running macOS 10.15 or later, and its requirements page asks for 15 Mbps for 720p at 60 frames a second and 25 Mbps for 1080p. It can only stream games that exist on PC, so GTA 6 can't be on it until a Windows version comes out.

So on day one, a Mac owner who wants GTA 6 needs a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S and a copy of the game for it, then Remote Play to put it on the Mac's screen when the TV is busy.

Why Windows tools on a Mac won't help yet

They need a Windows game, and there isn't one. Even after a Windows version comes out, three things stand in the way on a Mac.

  • Boot Camp is gone on new Macs. It let Intel Macs start up in Windows, but "Boot Camp is not supported on Apple silicon Macs," as Wikipedia's Boot Camp article) puts it, because Apple's M-series chips have no Windows drivers.
  • Translation tools have limits. CrossOver and Parallels run many Windows games on Apple silicon, but the newest, heaviest games are the hardest for them, and a game made for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be among the heaviest when it reaches PC.
  • Anti-cheat can block them. When Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA V on PC in September 2024, GTA Online stopped working on the Steam Deck, which also runs Windows games through a compatibility layer, GamingOnLinux reported. Story mode kept working.

Don't buy a new Mac for GTA 6, and don't count on a Windows tool to run it once a PC version exists. Plan on streaming from a console instead.

Open-world games that run on a Mac today

Several big ones run natively on Apple silicon Macs, sold through the Mac App Store and the usual PC stores:

  • Cyberpunk 2077. A city game with cars, guns and a long story, out for Apple silicon Macs since July 17, 2025, on the Mac App Store, Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store. It needs at least 16 GB of memory, 9to5Mac reported.
  • Assassin's Creed Shadows. A large open world set in feudal Japan, on the Mac App Store since March 20, 2025, for Macs with Apple silicon, per MacTrast.
  • Death Stranding Director's Cut. A slow, strange open world about delivering cargo across a broken country, built to run natively on Apple silicon, on the Mac App Store, according to Kojima Productions.

None of them is a crime game in the GTA mold, and all three need an Apple silicon Mac. If you have an iPhone or an iPad, Rockstar also sells the remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy (GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas) there, at $19.99 per game since December 2023, MacDailyNews reported. Those listings are for iPhone and iPad, not for the Mac.

Browser games you can play on a Mac right now

GTA-style city games that run in a browser tab, with no download and no console. They are smaller than GTA, made by small teams and free, and they work on Intel Macs too, since the browser does the graphics work.

We opened ten of them in Chrome on a 2018 Intel MacBook Pro and timed them; the results, with what each one is like, are in our list of free GTA-style games you can play in a browser. Some are crime stories with missions, some are just for driving, and a few run on phones as well.

One of them is ours. The Pillar opens straight into a 3D city: you can walk, drive, carjack, fly a helicopter or a plane, glide in a wingsuit and pick up rockets and other weapons from loot boxes, with cartoon crashes and no blood. Two street crews fight it out a block or two away, and other players share the city live. On that 2018 MacBook Pro it downloaded about 1.4 MB and was ready to play within 10 seconds. It's free and needs no sign-up to play.

A browser game won't look like GTA 6. It can fill the weeks before launch, and the months after it for anyone without a console.

What to watch for before November 19

Any change will come from Rockstar or from Take-Two first. Rockstar posts news on its Newswire, and Take-Two lists coming games and their platforms in its quarterly earnings releases, the same kind of release that lists GTA 6 for consoles only today. A Windows version would show up in one of them before any store page.

Treat "GTA 6 Mac download" pages with care. Until Rockstar announces a Mac or PC version, a site offering one is offering something else, and often something you don't want on your computer. The real ways onto a Mac for now are the streaming apps from Sony and Microsoft.

We'll update this page on launch day, November 19, with anything new about PC or Mac.

Who pays for The Pillar?

Brands do. The Pillar is free to play because the windows of its tower and the billboards in its city are ad space that companies rent by the month, from $9 for a window on the first floor. Tower windows cost $9 to $392.85 a month by floor, and the advertiser guide has every price.

In legal terms: The Pillar is a 3D open-world browser game and an advertising marketplace. A window is a licensed ad pane on its 80-floor tower, not real property and not a security. The ads are part of the scenery, so they don't pop up over the game or interrupt a drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play GTA 6 on a MacBook Air M4?

Not by installing it. GTA 6 only exists for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so no Mac can run it, whatever the chip. If you own one of those consoles, you can stream the game to the MacBook Air with Sony's PS Remote Play app or Xbox's browser streaming.

Will GTA 6 be on the Mac App Store?

Nothing suggests it. Rockstar hasn't announced a Mac version, Take-Two's August 2026 earnings release lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and neither GTA IV, GTA V nor Red Dead Redemption 2 ever came to the Mac.

Can I play GTA 6 on my Mac if I own a PS5?

Yes. Install Sony's free PS Remote Play app on the Mac, turn on Remote Play in the PS5's settings, and connect a DualSense controller with a USB cable. The game runs on the PS5 and the Mac shows the picture. Sony asks for at least 5 Mbps, and 15 Mbps for the best results.

Is GTA 6 on Xbox Game Pass?

Not at launch, based on everything announced. GTA 6 is sold at full price, and Take-Two hasn't put it in any subscription. Xbox owners can still stream their own copy to a Mac browser at xbox.com/play using Remote Play.

When will GTA 6 come to PC?

There's no date. GTA V reached Windows 19 months after its console launch and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year after, so a Windows version would most likely come after late 2027. That is a guess from past games, not an announcement.

Can I use Boot Camp to play GTA 6?

No, for two reasons. GTA 6 has no Windows version to install, and Boot Camp is not supported on Apple silicon Macs, only on older Intel Macs. Even on an Intel Mac, Boot Camp would need a Windows version of the game first.

Who is GTA 6 rated for?

Adults. The ESRB rates Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+, for blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content and the use of drugs and alcohol. This guide is written for adult players.

Is there a free GTA-style game I can play on my Mac now?

Yes, in a browser. Several free city games run in a browser tab with no download, including our own game, The Pillar. Our list of free GTA-style browser games has the ones we tested and how fast each one loaded.
